Why You Should Still Take the SAT

Widespread closures of test-centers due to continued COVID-19 concerns (if you missed it, read about the announcement here) means that many students won’t be able to take the SAT or SAT Subject Tests they have registered for. Given that most colleges have gone test-optional for at least the 2020-21 admissions cycle, we understand that students might be tempted to throw in the towel and skip the SAT or ACT. However, if there is even the smallest chance your child is still able to take the exams before applications are due, she absolutely should.

As tedious as the process of standardized testing may be, it’s a hugely important part of the application process. The SATs, SAT Subject Tests, and ACTs are an opportunity for applicants to provide a fuller picture of their academic abilities and potential, especially since the efficacy of Spring 2020 grades have been compromised. That being the case, colleges have expressed their intention for leniency and realistic expectations when it comes to students whose applications may have suffered for one reason or another during COVID-19.

However, that’s one more reason to take the SAT. Colleges also understand that the pandemic has caused cancellations for everyone all around the world, therefore if this year’s applicant pool seems to have more limited extracurricular activities or even test scores, they can see and understand why. But the more information you give to colleges, the better equipped they are to deem you the “right fit” for their school. A student who submits their test scores will have more to catch the eye of a college admissions officer.
