Judge Bans Optional Test Scores for UC

A few months ago, we reported on the University of California’s groundbreaking announcement that the submission of SAT and ACT scores for the Classes of 2025 and 2026 would be optional, and that for in-state residents applying for admission for the Classes of 2027 and 2028, these scores would not be considered at all – for in-state residents.

However, a Superior Court Judge on September 1st ruled that no test scores can be considered, from anyone, even by the students who chose to submit them, citing that the challenges with testing sites and resources put too many students at a disadvantage, particularly those from lower-income backgrounds or with disabilities. An official spokesperson for the University of California says it “respectfully disagrees with the Court’s ruling.”

As the largest university system in the U.S., it’s unclear yet how this decision will affect admissions for schools across the country, as pandemic-related uncertainty persists. For expert guidance on college admissions and standardized test preparation, schedule a free consultation with Ivy Link.
