Brown University announced today that they are renewing their test-optional policy for the 2021-22 admissions cycle. They were a little late to the game this year, but not last! At the time of this writing, Yale has yet to announce a test-optional policy for the new year. That said, it’s only a matter of time.

As we’ve said time and again, and will keep saying, students still need to take the SAT and/or ACT. The only way for a student to potentially not be disadvantaged is if they live in an area where there weren’t any tests available between now and the application deadlines. Colleges can see locales where that may be the case. If another student in the same area manages to get a score to report, highly competitive colleges will prioritize that student, assuming they also have a stellar academic and extra-curricular record.

The College Board announcement from January 19 hints that there may be online testing this year, but it is not explicitly stated one way or the other. Don’t wait to register for test dates, register for as many as you can, and expect cancellations.
