What is an Independent Project?
Are you an academically-oriented student but have trouble with extracurricular activities? One way to showcase your scholastic vigor is through the execution of an independent project.
What is an independent project?
In short, an independent project is a rigorous scientific investigation into a research question of your choice. The topic of your project can vary based on your interest and will follow the scientific method of research. While you (with the guidance of your mentor) design your own topic, you will be required to collect data, research recent publications on your topic, and write a research paper or academic presentation.
Why should you do an independent project?
An independent project is a great way for you to further explore your interests. You can continue research you have enjoyed for a class or get the chance to research a subject not offered in your required curriculum. Furthermore, by creating and executing the project, you are showcasing your initiative and management skills to the schools to which you plan on applying.
When should you start an independent project?
You want to start planning your project as soon as possible. Ideally, an independent project will take some time to execute. You should expect your project to take an entire summer, a whole semester, or even an entire school year, depending on what you choose to do. For best results, set a schedule by which to accomplish tasks. This way you can plan your time accordingly to finish the project by a deadline.
