Stanford Updates Admissions Standardized Test Requirements for 2022-2023 Admissions Cycle

In the Daily Princetonian earlier this month, Stanford University revealed that they have extended the existing test-optional application policy for prospective undergraduate students through the 2022–23 admissions cycle. Stanford, one of the world's leading teaching and research institutions, made this decision “in light of continued challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic”. According to Deputy University Spokesperson Michael Hotchkiss, “The Admission Office continues to monitor the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the college admission process during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly as it relates to the availability of standardized testing.”

Meanwhile, the University of California recently announced it was eliminating SAT and ACT scores from its admission considerations completely. This begs the question, will other colleges follow Stanford or the University of California when it comes to standardized testing policies for incoming classes? Even though most colleges are not requiring the SAT or ACT, students still need to take the test to be competitive. Highly selective universities like Princeton, Yale, and Harvard are not releasing the percentage of students admitted with and without scores. Of the few elite universities that have released testing data, it does appear that students with strong test scores enjoy a significant advantage in admissions.  Be sure to subscribe to Ivy Link’s newsletter for the latest news on standardized testing requirements for universities and more!
