SAT/ACT Updates + 2025 Test Dates
As we move further into the year, the college admissions process is starting to feel more real. If you're planning to take the SAT or ACT in 2025, it’s time to get serious about your prep. Whether it’s your first time taking the test or you're aiming for a higher score, staying informed about the latest updates and key test dates will give you the edge. Let’s dive into the changes and upcoming test dates you need to know to set yourself up for success.
SAT & ACT Updates You Need to Know
Both the SAT and ACT are evolving, and being informed about the changes ensures that you can use your prep time wisely.
SAT Updates:
Transition to Digital Testing: Starting in 2024, the SAT is fully digital. That means you’ll be taking the test on a computer. The new format features adaptive questions, which means the test will adjust based on your responses—making it more personalized and efficient.
Shorter Testing Time: The digital SAT will take just 2 hours and 14 minutes, significantly shorter than the previous 3-hour test. This helps you stay focused and get through the test without feeling fatigued.
No More Essay: Since June 2021, the SAT Essay has been removed. That’s one less section you need to worry about, so you can focus all your prep on the critical areas: Math, Reading, and Writing.
ACT Updates:
ACT Online Testing: Beginning in April 2025, the ACT will offer an online testing option. The online format will be shorter and will now be just 2 hours and 5 minutes, down from the usual 3-hour duration. This means more time per question, allowing you to focus on doing your best in each section.
More Flexibility with Science: One exciting change is that you can now choose whether to take the Science section. This allows you to customize the test based on your strengths and gives you control over your exam experience.
Online Testing Enhancements: The online ACT will also offer better pacing, improved efficiency, and enhanced accessibility features like screen readers and text-to-speech for students who need these tools. These changes ensure all students have equal access to performing their best.
Section Retesting: Another great update is section retesting, available starting in 2025. If you don’t perform well on one section, you’ll have the opportunity to retake just that section—instead of having to retake the entire test. This means you can focus on what really matters and save time.
