Introducing AI Text Classifier

Last week, we posted a couple of blogs about ChatGPT, the Artificial Intelligence program that has dominated headlines recently. Basically, the new technology can create any number of writing projects, including academic essays complete with citations, with just a few commands. This has gotten educators worried about the future of academia amidst fears that the technology will hinder student learning. Several cities, including New York City, have already banned the technology in secondary schools. But several universities and colleges are still debating how to move forward in light of this new technology.

On January 31, OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT, announced the launch of the new AI Text Classifier, a tool that can help educators detect the use of AI technology in a piece of writing. The Text Classifier will classify a written work fed through its system as very unlikely, unlikely, unclear, possibly, or likely written by AI technology. While this is good news, it is important to note that this is just an early version of the technology. Therefore, the technology is not foolproof.

According to the statement issued by OpenAI, “Our classifier is not fully reliable. In our evaluations on a ‘challenge set’ of English texts, our classifier correctly identifies 26% of AI-written text (true positives) as ‘likely AI-written,’ while incorrectly labeling human-written text as AI-written 9% of the time (false positives). Our classifier’s reliability typically improves as the length of the input text increases.”

So, as of now, the new technology should be used more as a guide than a guarantee. Educators will still have to ultimately determine whether or not an essay was created using the AI technology making the difficult task of grading essays even more difficult.

As of now, both ChatGPT and AI Text Classifier are available for free online. Though, due to high demand, there are significant waitlists to use both technologies.

This story is still unfolding. We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
