Harvard's Access Is Expanding—So Is the Competition

Harvard recently announced that it will offer free tuition to families earning up to $200,000 starting in the 2025–26 academic year. The change is part of an expanded financial aid policy that also includes full coverage of housing, food, travel, and health insurance for families earning $100,000 or less. According to Harvard, this new model could make roughly 86% of U.S. families eligible for some form of aid.

While this financial shift may not affect families who have long planned for the full cost of attendance, the strategic implications are clear. Expanded access is expected to increase the number of well-qualified applicants—raising the bar for differentiation in an already highly competitive landscape.

In a recent Wall Street Journal feature, Ivy Link founder Adam Nguyen remarked that making elite colleges more affordable “will open up the socioeconomic ladder to a lot of families, and to networks that they didn’t have before.” As more students are encouraged to apply, the need for early planning and precise positioning becomes even more critical.

A Broader Pool, Same Selectivity

Harvard’s acceptance rate remains under 4%, and its admissions committee continues to seek candidates with demonstrated excellence, depth of character, and long-term potential. What has changed is the size and makeup of the applicant pool. With more qualified students encouraged to apply, families must be even more deliberate in how they shape a student’s academic narrative.

Selective colleges still evaluate thousands of academically strong applicants—but what sets successful candidates apart is coherence, clarity, and distinction across every component of the application.

Why Early Strategy Matters More Than Ever

Top-tier institutions are looking for more than credentials. They seek applicants who know who they are, where they’re going, and how they’ve made meaningful use of their time.

This level of self-awareness and impact isn’t crafted in a single semester. It’s developed through a long-term admissions strategy—thoughtful course planning, purpose-driven extracurriculars, and a personal story that connects the dots.

The Ivy Link Advantage

Founded by Adam Nguyen, Ivy Link delivers tailored admissions guidance to families seeking excellence and foresight at every stage of the process. From academic advising to narrative development and school list strategy, Ivy Link helps students approach the application process with focus, depth, and a clear competitive edge.

As the landscape continues to evolve, Ivy Link remains focused on what families can control: how a student is developed, how they are positioned, and how they present themselves—authentically and effectively—to the most selective institutions.

In a more competitive environment, strong outcomes begin with early, intentional choices. Ivy Link supports families who are not just aiming for access—but for distinction at the highest levels.
